Celebrate This Day!

November 16, 2008, 7:30pm curtain

This year our celebrations include our presidential election along with the traditional observance of the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Copland's "Lincoln Portrait" offers a stirring musical framework for the enduring words of our 16th president. These words remind us again and again of what it means to be an American.

Symphonic Treasures!

March 29, 2009, 2pm curtain

The year 1944 was a dangerous time in Soviet Russia for creative artists. A paralyzing criticism of their work could come at any moment from the government censors, thus endangering an artist's very body and soul. Prokofiev was well aware of the peril he faced as a composer and yet was able to create a symphony that --with it's biting wit, soaring melodic lines, and powerful finale -- was later hailed as one of the defining works of the 20th century.

May 10, 2009, 2pm curtain

We are honored to be part of the Contra Costa Children's Chorus 25th Anniversary Celebration by collaborating with it in a semistaged performance of The Nightingale, a one act opera by Imant Raminsh that features the children's chorus in the most central role. Based on the famous Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, The Nightingale is the story of a Chinese emperor's fascination with the beautiful song of a nightingale.
