Ushers - All ushers must attend an orientation/training session prior to ushering. These sessions are scheduled twice a year. Ushers are asked to commit to ushering for at least one performance per month, but are always welcome to usher as often as their schedule permits. (We currently have over 600 volunteer ushers) Please click here for more information about ushering.

Usher Information
Usher Eligibility
- When applying to become an usher you are applying for a job! We only have a few openings each training session.
- Usher positions are open to anyone over the age of sixteen, and who has attended an orientation session.
- Most Ushers will be required to remain on their feet for extended periods of time and/or to climb stairs. Volunteers who are physically challenged are welcome to apply.
- Ushers must have vision sufficient to read theatre tickets without difficulty, and to maneuver in a darkened atmosphere.
- All volunteers are expected to make a commitment of no fewer than one event per calendar month and two events during December. Volunteers are encouraged to sign up for as many events as they wish.
Continued eligibility will be based on:
- Reliability
- Friendly attitude
- Ability to perform all required tasks
- Responsibility, cooperative and courteous attitude toward patrons and fellow volunteers.
Dress Code
- Female Ushers must wear black dress slacks or black dress skirt and a collared white blouse or white shirt with sleeves. Blouses and shirts must be tucked in unless they are tailored and fitted. Please keep accessories such as scarves and large jewelry to a minimum. On cold days, a plain black or white suit jacket or sweater is permitted, as long as it looks professional and opens down the front so the white top is not obscured.
- Male ushers must wear black pants and a collared white shirt. On cold days, a plain black or white sweater is permitted, as long as it looks professional and opens down the front so the white top is not obscured.
- The Center provides vests that are required for most ushering assignments, events that will not require vests will often be noted on usher sign-up calendars and event listings.
- All Ushers are expected to wear plain black dress shoes with black socks, stockings or hose. No sneakers, tennis or running shoes, clogs, flip-flops or hiking boots allowed! Keep in mind, you should only wear shoes that you can stand in for 4 hours and do a lot of walking up and down aisles and steps. If you have medical needs that require a certain type of shoe that does not appear to fit the code, please let the Usher Coordinator know and she will note your record.
- Please: No jeans (any color), Capri (pedal-pusher) pants, mini-shirts, leggings or sweat shirts or suits, t-shirts, sandals or any shoe with open toes. Such footwear presents a safety hazard.
- No fanny-packs or backpacks or hats, caps (baseball or otherwise) or berets may be worn while ushering at any time.
- All ushers are expected to supply their own (working) pocket flashlight. The best flashlights are those that are powerful, yet small and have a concentrated beam. Any flashlight that shines up off the floor or has a beam that spreads too wide will not be allowed.
- All clothing must be cleaned and ironed. The House Manager will determine if clothing is deemed too revealing, too short, unprofessional or inappropriate and you will be sent home.
Attendance
- In the event of a scheduling conflict, volunteers are expected to contact the Usher Desk at least 24 hours prior to scheduled assignment. The Usher Desk is staffed Monday-Friday from 9am-Noon. Messages may be left on the voicemail 24 hours a day. The phone number is (925) 295-1414
- Failure to report for an assignment without notice will be considered an unexcused absence; three strikes and you're out!
- The first incident will be followed up by a call from the coordinator;
- The second incident will result in 90 days ineligibility.*
- The third incident will result in permanent ineligibility.
- Those with a sincere desire to improve their reliability may attend another orientation session after the 90-day period of ineligibility has expired.
